How not to ruin new gloves in the first month
TL;DR: Wash before first use. First training session dry. Wash after each use in cool water. Dry for 24h fingers up. Rotate from day 2.
Why the First 30 Days Matter
A new pair of gloves has a unique moment: the latex is fresh, the foam grips maximally. During the first month, it settles in wear curve:
- A poorly treated pair = after 30 days, it's like it's 3 months old
- A well-treated pair = still performs like new after 30 days.
The difference between these scenarios is 2-3 months of additional glove life. 5 minutes a day is worthwhile.
5 rules for the first month
1. Wash BEFORE first use
New latex has a protective layer from the factory — it prevents drying out during transport. This layer reduces grip by 20-30%.
What to do:
- Cold water (not warm, never!)
- Mild soap or specialized latex gel
- Gently wipe with fingers, especially the gripping surface
- Rinse
- Air dry for 24h
Only then is the glove ready for its first game.
2. First training: dry, without additional grip, max 60-90 min
Don't jump straight into a match in the rain. The first session is about 'breaking them in':
- Dry grass, reasonable pitch
- No glue (really unnecessary)
- 60-90 min max
- Gentle exercises (catching, saves, clearances) — not ground battles
The glove 'settles' on your hand, the foam conforms to your reflexes.
3. Wash after EVERY match, after EVERY dirty training session
Even if it seems clean — sand, mud, and turf residue embed themselves in the foam and act like sandpaper. Washing is not an option.

4. Drying: 24h, fingers up, in a dry place
Always:
- Air dry, at room temperature
- Fingers up (to prevent water from accumulating in the fingertips)
- Ventilated bag or outside the bag on the counter
Never:
- Heater
- Sun (UV degrades foam)
- Clothes dryer
- In sealed plastic
A pair needs a full 24-hour cycle. Day after day training = wet foam, grip deteriorates 30-40% faster.
5. Rotation from day 2
This is most important if you train frequently. One pair for everything is a dead end.
Minimum: a second pair of training gloves (Invictus X Training, HARD+ 3.5 mm, approx. 179 EUR):
- Match — matches only + 1 important training session per week
- Training — remaining 3-5 sessions
Two pairs dry alternately; neither is used wet. Result: one pair lasts 1.3× longer, two pairs last 3× longer.
What NOT to do — list of 7
- Do not use glue — not needed for FM latexes, it accelerates wear.
- Do not machine wash — mechanical damage to the foam.
- Do not dry on a radiator — foam dries disproportionately, cracks.
- Do not use the same pair day after day — no 24h drying.
- Do not store in sealed plastic — moisture, bacteria, odor.
- Do not scrub the foam with harsh brushes — you will scratch the grip surface.
- Do not pack wet gloves for a trip — this is the fastest way to destroy them.
Post-training daily cycle (5 minutes)
- After training — cool water, mild soap, rinse
- Squeeze out excess water (do not wring)
- NOT on a radiator — use a towel or shoe dryer, fingers pointing upwards
- Dry for 24h before next use
- If you play tomorrow — take a second pair
A pair for the season
With these 5 rules:
- Match gloves (X PRO) — 8-10 months (full season)
- Training pair (Training) — 4-6 months
- Monthly glove cost — approx. 60-80 EUR monthly depreciation
Without these rules:
- Match gloves — 2-3 months
- Training pair — 6-8 weeks
- Monthly cost — 150-200 EUR
Difference: 90-120 EUR per month. There is no more important ROI in goalkeeper equipment.
