Every goalkeeper has seen it: gloves that "fall apart" after 6 weeks, and the same gloves that last a whole season for your teammate. There's no magic. It's simple chemistry: latex is an organic material (60% natural rubber), which degrades under heat, UV, detergents, salt. Your maintenance job is minimizing these 4 factors.
1. After every session—4-minute routine
- Rinse mud/sand under cool running water (30°C max). Don't scrub, just rinse. 60 seconds per glove.
- Gently squeeze out without twisting. Twisting = seam tears.
- Lay on a towel flat, fingers up, away from heaters and direct sun. 12-24 h to fully dry.
- Store in cotton bag, not in a plastic bag — latex needs to breathe.
That's 4 minutes. Those 4 minutes are the difference between 3 and 9 months of glove life.
2. Wash — once every 8–12 training sessions
Not after every training. Washing = latex wear. The more often, the faster.
Hand wash protocol
- Bowl with lukewarm water (30°C), 2-3 liters.
- Add specialized goalkeeper glove shampoo (Glove Glu, Uhlsport Glove Wash, our FM Glove Care) — 15–20 ml. Do NOT use hair shampoo, soap, or dish liquid. Standard detergents run pH 9–10 and destroy latex.
- Soak gloves 10-15 min, GENTLY rub your fingers over the grip surface. Don't scrub.
- Rinse with cool water until all foam is gone.
- Squeeze without wringing. Dry like after training.
Never a washing machine. High spin + detergent + hot water = gloves done after 1-2 cycles. We've seen it hundreds of times.
3. Latex conditioning — when and how
Goalkeeper latex loses elasticity with every training session. You can only recover it partially — good care slows the process by 40-60%.
After every 3–4 training sessions (or after washing), apply latex refresher ("glove activator"—FM Glove Refresher, RG Grip Renew). Lightly spray the grip surface, work it in with your hand, let dry overnight. Restores micro-grip without aggressive structural damage.
Do NOT use: vaseline, oil, skin balm. Not the same thing.
4. Before match — activation, not "first wear"
Dry latex = less grip. 15 minutes before warmup:
- Spray the grip surface with a spray bottle (1-2 sprays, not a flood).
- Spread with your hand (other glove on your hand).
- Glove ready for the catch — wet latex has 15–25% higher friction than dry.
That's a pro trick—you'll see it in the top league before every match.
5. Long-term storage (off-season break)
- Gloves clean and completely dry (dry for 48h in a shaded spot).
- Put on cotton bag or perforated boxes.
- Location: 59-72°F, humidity 40-60%. Dry basements OK, humid garage NO.
- Don't stack them on top of each other — latex has memory.
Never leave in direct sunlight. UV degrades latex 3-5% per month of continuous exposure. 6 months in a window = glove like paper.
6. Signs it's time to replace (regardless of care)
- Latex crumbles during washing (particles on fingers).
- Grip visually "lost color" — darker areas untouched, light = worn.
- Seams spread on the inside of the fingers.
- Grip disappeared when wet, despite proper activation (ball slips).
Normal lifespan with good care: 30-50 match-training sessions. With poor care: 10-20. See also: when to replace gloves (full guide).
You invested in gloves. Protect them.
The FM care kit includes latex shampoo, grip activator, and a cotton pouch. Your gloves will last 3× longer. Order from the FM shop or check out our flagship Invictus X Pro.

| Scenario | Pair/year | Cost/year |
|---|---|---|
| No maintenance | 4-5 pairs | 1 800-2 250 zł |
| With full care | 1-2 pairs + 50 zł care products | 500-900 zł |
| Savings | — | 1,000-1,500 zł/year |
4 minutes daily. A thousand zloty a year. Simple math.
8. What science says — latex degradation
Study on natural latex degradation in sports (Kim et al., Polym Degrad Stab 2014) confirms: the three biggest degradation factors are (1) UV exposure, (2) alkaline detergents, (3) repeated heating above 40°C. Do less of these 3, your glove lasts 2-3× longer. Science backs up experience.
Summary — checklist
- After training: rinse with lukewarm water, squeeze out, air dry flat for 24 hours.
- Wash: every 8–12 trainings, specialist shampoo only, never machine wash.
- Activation: spray with water atomizer before every match.
- Storage: cotton bag, 59-72°F, zero direct sun.
- Replace: when latex crumbles or seams give way.
Your gloves last as long as you let them. 4 minutes daily = $1,500 in your wallet yearly. FM, a Polish brand since 2014, backs this with our 200,000+ goalkeepers.
